Silver Spring -19th Annual World AIDS Day to be observed on December 01, 2006
Theme: Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise.
The largest global grassroots HIV/AIDS event!
On December 01, 2006, the International Annual World AIDS Day observance will be held in more than 3,000 communities in 85 countries making it the largest grassroots HIV/AIDS event. It will be held in Silver Spring for the first time! This worldwide event, commemorates the lives lost to AIDS, demonstrates support for people living with HIV/AIDS, and mobilizes community-based responses to HIV/AIDS.
This year, the world AIDS day -candlelight vigil- will take place at the Silver Spring Veterans Field (8515 Fenton St off MD 29) from 5PM to 7PM on December 01, 2006 and is organized by A Global Healthcare Public Foundation in partnership with Abbott Laboratories (www.abbott.com) and the Embassy of the Republic of Benin.
The theme of this year’s World AIDS Day is “Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise.” According to the Foundation’s honorary chair, H.E. Ambassador Cyrille S. Oguin, “The Candlelight Vigil on World AIDS day is an opportunity for each of us to dedicate ourselves to the fight against AIDS. We will join together in our commitment to continue to fight AIDS until the pandemic is over for all people everywhere.”
Around the world, community based organizations, religious groups and coalitions of people living with HIV/AIDS are planning events. Observances will include a variety of events, from the lighting of candles and oil lamps in over 200 rural villages in Africa and Southeast India to processions in Latin America to interfaith memorial services held in towns all over the U.S.
At this event, there will be singing led by a local Christian women’s choir, a documentary of the last 18 world AIDS day, speeches by local political leaders, Ambassador Cyrille Oguin and members of the HIV/AIDS community. The high light of the event will be the putting out of the candles to mark the end of HIV.
