HIV/AIDS

New data shows that the global HIV prevalence – the percentage of people living with HIV – has leveled off and the number of new infections has fallen in part as a result of the impact of HIV programs. However, in 2007, 33.2 million people were estimated to be living with HIV. There were an estimated 1.7 million new infections in sub-Saharan Africa. 68% of the global total of people living with HIV is in sub-Saharan Africa. Mortality in Africa remains high due to the extensive unmet treatment need. There is still a need to review and adapt HIV prevention efforts as some countries are seeing a reversal of their declining trends.
